Connecting decision makers to a dynamic network of information, people and ideas, Bloomberg quickly and accurately delivers business and financial information, news and insight around the world. Unprofitable companies are raising money in initial public offerings at the fastest pace since the dot-com bubble when a revolution in the banking industry sparked a rush to risk. The 2019 class of IPOs includes a number of so-called unicorns, including high-profile market entrants like Uber Technologies Inc., Lyft Inc., and Pinterest Inc. Together, the unprofitable IPOs have already raised the most cash of any year since at least 2000, according to a Bloomberg analysis of listings worth $100 million or more. Peloton Interactive Inc.’s Thursday debut on the Nasdaq is just the latest money-losing firm to go public—and also the latest to disappoint. The fitness company tumbled in its first day of trading, in the third-worst debut of the past decade by any U.S.-listed firm that raised at least $1 bi...

Computer programmed light show lights up Vermilion Parish road

LEROY — Down a narrow country road named Tee Robe in Leroy, is a house with lights so bright many come to see. 50,000 lights decorate the Roy family’s lawn. Each one “dances” to the beat of a song. Cars drive up, and turn the radio to a specific station. “Just about everything in the yard is DIY, I got garden edging, PVC pipe, and rebar, it’s just a matter of putting everything the way you want it to be, and making the lights dance to the song” David Roy said. “I remember my parents packing us all In the car and we would go anywhere and everywhere to see all of the lights, and you don’t see a whole lot of that anymore” Roy said. Each light bulb has a computer chip connected by wires, those wires run back to his desk top. He then uses a software that makes the magic happen. “You’re looking at roughly 3-4 hours per 10 seconds of a song, so the programming can be intense. Naturally the more props you put out, the more lights you put out, the more programming needed. So it’s a year long process” Roy said. Roy says the most asked question is something you’re probably wondering as well, “what abo...

Jason Sudeikis punched Baby Yoda, and The Mandalorian fans punch back

If there’s one lesson people who come in contact with The Mandalorian should learn, it’s this: Do NOT mess with Baby Yoda. The beloved little green guy (whose real name we still don’t know), may be 50 years old, but in his species, that’s still a baby, and he’s also the cutest darn baby in the Star Wars universe. Do not chase him, drop him, poke him or threaten to experiment on him because Mando (Pedro Pascal) and his ragtag band of pals will make you pay. It’s a lesson comedian, actor and Saturday Night Live vet Jason Sudeikis should have learned before now. So in the opening scene of the first-season finale, made available on the Disney Plus streaming service Friday, Baby Yoda has been snatched away by two scout troopers, played by Sudeikis and Adam Pally (The Mindy Project). They’re hidden in trooper armor, so you can’t see their faces, but neither of them are too fond of the little guy. Both of them punch — yes, punch — the bag containing Baby Yoda, Sudeikis to keep him quiet and Pally after he prods the little dude and gets his finger bitten for doing so. Jason Sudeikis playing a stormtrooper in #TheMandalorian fin...

Does it feel like many friends and family members announce the pending arrival of a baby

Does it feel like many friends and family members announce the pending arrival of a baby during the fall and winter months? That’s not exactly a coincidence. It turns out the cold season is associated with more reproductive activity than any other time of the year. The month of December alone accounts for 9 percent of conceptions in the United States. Science is gaining a better understanding of why. All living creatures heed an evolutionary instinct to target seasonal births. If conception happens during colder months, babies will be born during warmer months, when resources will be bountiful. Northern states have births peaking in June and July, while southern states come a bit later in October and November. The farther south, the later the birth peak, since people in these warm climates are less influenced by frigid temperatures. What are frisky humans responding to in colder months? Research suggests that the cooler temperatures and shortened days signal that it’s time to get busy. Other theories suggest that men may be more fertile in colder months, or that a woman’s ovum receptivity might change with decreased daylight. Not only are couples potentially more sexually ...

Providence music ministry presents ‘A Cup of Christmas Tea’

Two Christmas trees covered in sparkling white lights flanked the entrance to the West Campus of Providence Baptist Church in Beauregard for “A Cup of Christmas Tea” event on Sunday night, Dec. 15. In the kitchen, ladies are busy arranging trays of homemade cookies and candies to place on every table in the sanctuary, which was festively decorated with several trees with white lights situated around the room. Suzanne Harris, Gayle Smith and Pam Morris, chairmen of the tea, named the event after the book “Cup of Christmas Tea.” Suzanne read the book after her sister-in-law gave a copy to her mother. The heartwarming story became special to her family. Written by Tom Hegg and illustrated by Warren Hanson, the book tells the story of a man who reluctantly decides to visit his elderly great-aunt during the Christmas season. During the visit, he recalls past holidays, finds peace and the Christmas spirit. “The story is a reminder,” says Suzanne, “that people need people at Christmas.” When Suzanne, who is the church pianist, and other ladies in the church were on a trip for music, they talked about needing another tradition at the church. They decided to have a tea and name it after ...

Springfield Thunderbirds donate stuffed animals from 4th annual Teddy Bear Toss (photos/video)

SPRINGFIELD — On Saturday, the Springfield Thunderbirds collected 4,887 stuffed animals in their Fourth Annual Teddy Bear Toss promotion in a game against the Laval Rocket. On Monday, players, team staffers and a few of those oversized plush toys buckled up on the team bus to make deliveries to various youth centers across Springfield. “A lot of other teams in the AHL, ourselves included, like to do this kind of things at the holidays because in most of these cities where American League teams have games, there are groups of underprivileged children who unfortunately don’t get to have the Christmas that many kids get to have,” said Ryan Smith, team manager of media, community relations and broadcasting. According to Smith, the idea was inspired by the Hershey Bears in particular, who pioneered the toy drive promotion and collect record numbers of teddy bears. Along for the ride were Thunderbirds’ forwards Henrik Borgstrom and Matt Marcinew, who handed out toys, posed for photos with kids, and helped at least one little girl decide between a pink or purple unicorn. “It’s definitely one of the better community service things we get to do this year and we’re sure going to enj...
