How the Creative Placemaking Tide Lifts All Community Boats

High school students from Chicago’s Washington Park neighborhood contribute to Sweet Water Foundation’s aquaponics program. On a Sunday afternoon in June, with the temperature well above 80 degrees, the Perry Avenue Commons on Chicago’s South Side bustles with a remarkable amount of activity. By the end of a warm weekend, you’d expect things to be winding down. But six or so volunteers and mentors tend vegetable plots of kale and leafy greens at one end of a four-block-by-four-property, part of a commercial farm and community garden managed by the nonprofit Sweet Water Foundation. A group who met at the commons for the women’s retreat earlier in the day wraps things up. Meanwhile, a half-dozen locals share recipes in the kitchen of the Think-Do House, a structure Sweet Water began to transform five years ago into a meeting place for workshops. Once upon a time in the early 20th century, the building was a reform home for delinquent boys. A couple attending church service nearby peeks in the community garden to marvel at the goings-on. These newcomers are drawn toward the commons with a curiosity borne not only from seeing people milling about the grounds, but because...

B&H Slashes Up to $900 from High-Powered 2018 MacBook Pros

Right now, B&H is holding a massive sale on 2018 MacBook Pro laptops, with discounts of $100 to $250 on most entry models and savings as high as $900 for top-spec models. With a new 2019 line of MacBook Pros recently launched, many retailers are scrambling to dump their stock of last year’s models to make room for the new crop of MacBooks once they arrive, and B&H is one to take note of. All of the 2018 MacBook Pros on sale on the site start with base specs of an 8th-generation (code-named “Coffee Lake”) Intel Core i5, 8GB of RAM, and a 256GB SSD, and all feature the distinguishing Touch Bar hardware, an adaptive row of touch buttons which change to match the context of running and open software. It helps to compare deals if there’s a specific model you want, which you can do with our MacBook Pro deal guide for June 2019, since other retailers boast lower price points depending on the configuration you are interested in (as consulting our June 2019 guide will demonstrate, Amazon still has B&H beat for the base MacBook Pro 2018 spec setup). However, there are definitely some steals among B&H’s stock. For instance, a MacBook Pro 15-inch with Touch Bar (2018) from B...

5 Times Kim Kardashian Was Accused Of Photoshopping Her Photos On Instagram

Kim Kardashian West sits at No. 57 on Forbes’ 2019 list of America’s Richest Self-Made Women with estimated earnings of $370 million. A huge chunk of that ($100 million to be exact) was reportedly made in sales from her 2-year-old cosmetics company KKW Beauty. So, I’m just a little confused as to how she hasn’t hired a professional photoshopper yet. I have no idea if that is seriously a job, but KKW can definitely afford one, whatever the salary. The number of times Kim Kardashian has been accused of photoshopping her photos is absurd, but also funny — and there are no signs of the Photoshop fails stopping. So, without further ado, here are some of the wackiest Kim K Photoshop fails to date. In this photo, things got a little wavy. Kardashian, along with on-and-off (though, seemingly off for the foreseeable future) BFF Blac Chyna, is clearly snapping a butt selfie, but there’s something distracting from her and Chyna’s derrieres. It’s the wavy tiles on the floor next to Kardashian’s hip. Whoa, floors don’t do that. Fans couldn’t help but point out that it looks as if the floor is seemingly hugging her thigh, making it a...

Sam Hill lights the Maribel World Cup DH course on fire. Hill was third fastest in

Sam Hill lights the Maribel World Cup DH course on fire. Hill was third fastest in the top splits, and easily made up the time on the blazing fast flat and off-camber corners in the lower section of the course for the win. Did he have a hidden advantage? Schwalbe’s Procore dual-tire system allows DH racers to safely run tubeless without burping air, and to optimize their tire pressures for the race course without risking pinch flats. Procore’s less obvious secret, however, is that when the two tires meet, they interact with the suspension to create a seamless compression event. The beads of the Procore system’s internal high-pressure treadless casing force-seal the beads of the main tire against the rim flanges. In the case of a puncture, the tire cannot leave the rim and remains partially supported by the high-pressure inner casing. As a result, a competitor can finish his ot her race run and possibly salvage points from what would have normally been a writeoff performance. That story has taken place at least once this year. Baldness discovery sees hair breaking through the skin of hairless mice

Scientists were able to generate new hair in bald mice that penetrated the skin(Credit: Sanford Burnham Prebys ) There are quite a few ways in which humans may one day be able to regrow hair, and an avenue that keeps promising to deliver is through induced pluripotent stem cells, or iPSCs. Scientists have again uncovered new possibilities in this area, managing to use the versatile cells to generate hair that looks and acts like the real thing. The research was carried out at the Sanford Burnham Prebys Medical Discovery Institute, and builds on earlier work by one of its scientists published in 2015. In that study, Alexey Terskikh, an associate professor in the Development, Aging and Regeneration Program, managed to grow hair underneath the skin of mice, a promising breakthrough but with obvious limitations. That technique centered on what are known as dermal papilla cells, which have actually been the focus of a lot of hair regrowth research. These cells, which live within the hair follicles and control how fast, thick and long hair grows, are seen as an equally important part of the hair regrowth puzzle as epithelial stem cells. These are stem cells typically found at the bulg...

Kaman to sell distribution business for $700M and focus on booming aviation markets

Kaman Corp., looking to expand its line of engineered products such as bearings and drive systems that supply the growing aerospace and medical device markets, said Wednesday it will sell its outsized distribution business to a private equity firm. The division, which represented 61 percent of Kaman’s $1.9 billion in revenue last year, is being sold for $700 million. Kaman’s aerospace business accounts for 39 percent. The sale to Greenwich-based Littlejohn & Co., which specializes in buyouts, restructurings, turnarounds and other transactions, is expected to close later this year. Chief Executive Officer Neal Keating said the deal will transform Kaman, founded in 1945 as a manufacturer and designer of helicopters, into a “pure play” aerospace and engineered products business. Kaman is in Bloomfield. “Over our nearly 75-year history we have gone through several transformation periods and ultimately this transaction is a logical next step in our portfolio evolution,” he said on a conference call with industry analysts. Diversification “has its merits,” Keating said. But investors will find greater opportunity in investing in engineered products in the aerospace and medical par...

OCBC Cycle 2019 first to receive Eco Event certification mark after successful effort to cut wastage, Latest Singapore News

OCBC Cycle 2019 has become the first event to earn the Singapore Environment Council’s Eco Event certification. The organisers of the cycling event that was held from May 10 to 12 managed to reduce wastage by almost 40,000 items – from bubble wrap to ziplock bags – compared with OCBC Cycle 2018. Measures to reduce waste included the replacement of paper flyers in event packs with large information boards at the event as well as on the OCBC Cycle website. Items in event packs – bibs, tags and apparel – were packed in recyclable paper envelopes instead of plastic bags. These trees were planted on June 1 at the Dairy Farm Nature Park, with the help of more than 60 cyclists as well as NParks and OCBC staff. Mr Seet Keng Zee, 32, started participating in OCBC Cycle in 2011. While he thought the waste-reducing initiatives were good, he had some suggestions on how OCBC could take the initiatives further. He told The New Paper: “OCBC could provide barrels of water and isotonic drinks instead of giving it in bottles – and inform participants to bring their own bottles. Of course, they have to make sure this doesn’t create a human traffic j...

John Deere introduces new high-capacity self-propelled forage harvesters

“Ultimately, high-quality feed helps livestock producers improve their feeding efficiency, animal health and productivity, while reducing their feeding costs,” said Tim Meister, division manager for marketing at John Deere. “The 9000 Series Self-Propelled Forage Harvesters produce superior silage quality that lay the foundation for a healthy and productive herd, which produces high milk or beef yields at low input costs.” Meister said the improved performance and capabilities of the 9000 Series enable producers and custom harvesters to obtain the highest possible return on investment under narrow harvesting windows where high-capacity and high-quality feed are the goal. “Custom harvesters can raise the profitability of their SPFH investment by covering more ground in the same harvesting window while increasing their margins through lower operating costs,” Meister explained. “The increased reliability and strengthened components found on the 9000 Series maximize uptime and ensure you’re in the field on time and ready to go.” Compared to its predecessor, the 9000 Series is 10 percent more productive per horsepower and offers a 10 percent improvement in kernel processing. Hugo Boss Launches Vegan Shoes Made with Pineapple Leather

Fashion label Hugo Boss is about to launch its first line of vegan footwear — a collection of sneakers for men crafted from pineapple leaf fiber. The new product line was created in response to the rapidly growing consumer demand for more sustainable and cruelty-free fashion. Piñatex is an innovative, sustainable and 100% cruelty-free material that makes a splendid substitute for leather. The leaves used to manufacture it are by-products from harvested pineapples, and therefore don’t need any extra resources to grow. Sourced from the Philippines, this progressive material is creating extra income for local farmers. Designed by Dr. Carmen Hijosa over the course of seven years, Piñatex is an ideal material for footwear, accessories, clothing, indoor furniture or even automobile upholstery. Hugo Boss describe the pineapple-leather shoes as “bold steps forward for responsible design,” with every pair of shoes featuring soles crafted from recycled TPU (thermoplastic polyurethane), a 50/50 cotton and linen lining, and organic cotton shoelaces. Even the four different colored dyes are plant-based. Not only is pineapple leather much easier on the environment and kinder to animals, it i...

20 Best Pocket Knives and Pocket Knife Brands for Everyday Use PM_Logo PM_Logo

There are plenty of good reasons to carry a pocket knife with you everywhere (except the airport), and there also plenty of quality knives to choose from—thousands, actually. To narrow it down, we looked for knives with blades no longer than five inches because anything bigger you wouldn’t want to carry around in your pocket. It should have a plain edge (serrated blades can serve you well, but you need a plain edge for most tasks). And it shouldn’t be overly tactical like that knife you bought at a flea market in 1983 after seeing Rambo on HBO for the 400th time. (Just us?) These knives check off all those boxes—and they’re extremely durable, too. This is the favorite pocket knife of Roy Berendsohn, longtime home editor of Popular Mechanics. “It’s hard to beat the classic Buck folder,” he says. “I have one my brother gave me decades ago. It’s a great knife, even if it may represent some sentimentalism for the 1970s, which is when these knives became famous. Growing up in Connecticut, I didn’t know anybody who hunted or fished who didn’t own one. This and the larger Buck 110 are truly famous knives. They have a well-earned reputation for toughness and the ability to be easily sha...
